The Provo School district is committed to state-of-the-art use of technology. The district has invested significant resources into the acquisition of technology equipment, as well as helping teachers learn how to use it. As a result, the students at Spring Creek get an exceptional experience in learning how to use technology.
New for the 2007-2008 year at Spring Creek are video projectors and SMART boards in nearly all classrooms. Remember the old chalkboards we had when we were in school? In recent decades, most have been replaced with white boards and dry erase markers that are easier to read and cleaner.
Well, those white boards have been updated with SMART boards, white boards that can be connected to a computer and video projector so that teachers can touch the SMART board to click on links, write or type text, show diagrams and animations and show video clips or other media resources. Teachers love them and it expands what teachers have in their bag of instructional techniques.
For example, instead of just telling students about the phases of the moon, and maybe showing a diagram, teachers can go to a website that actually shows the moon moving around the earth and changing phases as it goes. Or, instead of just drawing diagrams or showing still photos of microbes, teachers can download and show a video clip showing the little critters in action.
SMART boards and video projectors are a great resource that are helping students learn better at Spring Creek.
At the beginning of the 2006-07 school year, our technology department underwent a significant change as one of our computer labs was removed and replaced with two mobile labs containing 30 ibooks each. The mobile labs enable teachers to bring enough computers into their classrooms that every child can have one to use for work at his/her desk. This change reflects the district's emphasis on "technology integration", in which work on the computer is not separate, but is integrated with classroom work. Miss Strong has been given the primary responsibility for moving the labs around to th
e classrooms and assisting students and teachers in using them.
The intent of the mobile computer labs is to make computers more accessible for core subjects like reading, writing and math. For example, students use the computers to work with Yearly Progress Pro, a web-based system in which their math skills are assessed and detailed reports generated to let teachers know what skills each student needs to work on. Exercises are then assigned to match each student's needs, helping each to master skills that they are weak in.
Another way the students are able to use the mobile computers is in creating written and multimedia projects based on things they are learning in content areas like science and social studies.
Another important change that has been occuring at Spring Creek is the addition of eMints classrooms. eMints is a system of instruction that was originally developed in Missouri and is rapidly being adopted around the country. eMints combines educational practices that research has shown to be effective along with a strong emphasis on the use of technology. Consequently, an eMints classroom has 15-16 desktop computers, sufficient that there is one computer for every two students. Students thus work cooperatively on projects, both on the computer, and with more traditional materials. Projects emphasize student research on all aspects of a topic in depth and creation of a product that has some kind of application or relevance beyond the classroom. In addition, teachers have a video projector and Smart Board that allow them to use web-based resources much more effectively than in the typical classroom.
eMints was implemented in a 4th and 6th grade classroom during the 2005-06 school year and is being added in a 3rd an 6th grade classroom this year. The intent is to continue adding eMints classrooms every year.
Every teacher and some of the support staff have an Apple iBook. All of these computers connect wirelessly to the school's network and to the
internet. Since these are portable computers the teachers are able to use them anywhere in the building, take them to meetings and do their work when they go home. Teachers are much more productive because of these capabilities.
Teachers are able to enhance their lesson presentations with technology. Information and graphics can be acquired from the internet and can be presented to the class using software like Powerpoint. The computers have become an indispensable tool for planning and organizing curriculum. The computers are now very important to a teachers work life. They would not give them up without a fight.
